Getting Started with BJJ in Yuma

Yuma is a three-hour drive from both Phoenix and San Diego, so its academies are genuinely the only game in the far southwest — which makes the local scene tighter and more welcoming than big-city rooms. MCAS Yuma and the Yuma Proving Ground keep military grapplers on the mats; ask about military rates if that is you.

Yuma summers are the hottest in Arizona, and evening classes are the standard adaptation — expect the mats to fill after sunset from May through September. Hydrate all day before an evening class, not just during it; heat exhaustion on the mat is a rookie mistake the desert will punish.

Winter flips the town: snowbird season doubles Yuma’s population and brings visiting grapplers from across the US and Canada through the doors. Training through winter means new rolling partners every month — enjoy the variety, and do not be surprised when a quiet 60-year-old visitor turns out to be a black belt.
